The Women at the Well United Methodist Church is located inside the walls of the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville, Iowa. They are one of only two chartered United Methodist congregations of this kind, and one of about 19 worshipping communities inside prison walls around the United States.
They meet on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Sacred Space Chapel, where they are joined by men and women from around Iowa who choose to worship with them. The congregation and their supporters are committed to gathering together to share the teachings of Jesus Christ and to experience the life-transforming Spirit of God.
Why a prison congregation? It’s a response to the words of Jesus, “I was in prison and you visited me.” It is a place for the women to be the church.
Women at the Well UMC is a mission congregation, which means that it will never be fully supported by its members. (Most incarcerated women are employed but earn less than a dollar per hour.) They receive about 40% of their support through the larger United Methodist Church of Iowa.
